Cloudflare has launched a beta Web Search API that lets AI applications look up current information on the web. It runs through AI Gateway, Cloudflare's service for managing AI use. Instead of setting up separate accounts with each search company, a business can use one connection, one bill and one record of activity.

What it does

The tool lets AI agents fetch live results, such as recent news, changes to software tools and technical documentation. The results are handed to the AI model as background material while it works. It is available through REST APIs and Cloudflare Workers, and it supports bring-your-own-provider keys, meaning a company can use its own account with a search provider.

Cloudflare says today's agents often guess the address of a web page and get a 404 Not Found error when the guess is wrong. Searching is meant to avoid that guesswork.

Who provides the results

The beta pulls from three search providers: Ceramic.ai, Exa and Linkup. Cloudflare sets rules for them.

  • Their web crawlers must follow Cloudflare's verified-bot requirements.
  • Their responses must include a link to the crawled content.
  • Cloudflare charges the providers' list prices, with no extra markup.

Questions from developers

In a Hacker News discussion, readers debated search quality, limits on keeping data, and whether one combined service beats existing options. Developer Simon Willison said his first question about any search API is whether it lets you store and share the results. If not, he said, that is a significant limitation, and the answer is usually buried in the terms.

Another commenter, Maximilian Goisser of Erato Labs, said Cloudflare is becoming a trusted main supplier for companies already using it. Adding search to an existing bill could mean skipping a fresh procurement process.

What happens next

Cloudflare says it will identify providers that support Zero Data Retention, which means they do not keep the data they handle. It also plans to add native server tools to AI Gateway, starting with web search. Until then, developers can add search through Cloudflare Workers. The material does not say when the beta will end or how the feature will be priced beyond providers' list prices.

For businesses already using Cloudflare for AI, this may simplify tracking and paying for web search. The fine print on storing and reusing results still deserves a read before relying on it.

The takeaway

Cloudflare's search beta could simplify billing for AI tools, but check each provider's rules on storing and reusing results first.
