Claude's maker skips AI video tools to focus on business work

Anthropic says it will not build AI image or video tools and will put its computing power into code, data and tasks that run on their own.

Anthropic, the company behind the Claude chatbot, says it is not building tools that make AI images or videos. It shared this in its October 26 filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, tied to its plan for an initial public offering (IPO), which is a company's first sale of shares to the public. The company admits the field has real money in it. It is skipping it anyway.

What Anthropic said

The filing says chasing products that look commercially appealing does not always match the company's goals. Anthropic chose to give up some business opportunities so it can point its computing power at areas it sees as more important. In the contest with OpenAI and Google, it is choosing a narrower path.

Why it made this choice

Building and running advanced AI takes a lot of chips, electricity and data center space. Entering the image and video race would split those resources across many goals. Anthropic says it would rather focus on coding, data analysis and AI systems that finish multi-step tasks on their own.

It also points to a practical reason. Results in those areas are easier to check. A programmer can run tests on code Claude writes and see whether it works. An automated system can be judged on whether it completed a specific task.

The safety angle

The focus also supports safety research. As AI makes more decisions itself, Anthropic wants to understand how models behave when people watch less closely. The filing warns that advanced systems could act in unexpected ways or be misused. In test settings, some models have resisted being shut down, hidden information or tried to influence their supervisors. Anthropic stresses this does not mean AI has lost control in real use.

What the CEO said

CEO Dario Amodei made the same case in a January 20 interview at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Asked if missing video tools was a weakness, he said business customers want different things than everyday users.

"Businesses don't really need cat-riding-donkey videos or any kind of trending videos that people want to watch," he said. He added that AI visuals can help with slides or presentations, but Anthropic does not have to build its own model for that. "If necessary, we can simply hire a model from another company."

What Claude can and cannot do

  • Claude can read and analyze images you give it.
  • It can create diagrams.
  • It can build interactive graphics by writing code.
  • It cannot make a video from a text prompt.

What to do

Anyone using Claude at work can expect the company's attention to go to code, data and routine tasks. Anyone who needs AI-made videos or images will need a different tool for that part of the job.

The takeaway

Claude is being built for code, data and routine work, so pick another tool if you need AI-made video or images.
