Claude used 84.6K of its memory budget before I typed a word

A writer found Claude's desktop app used 84.6K tokens after one 'Hi'. Trimming add-ons and old chats helped, and the terminal version started far lighter.

A How-To Geek writer typed a single word, "Hi," into the Claude desktop app and saw 84.6K tokens already used. That was more than eight times the 5K to 10K he expected. Tokens are the small chunks of text an AI counts as it reads and writes, and they are what a plan's usage limit is built on.

What was found

The writer pays $20 a month for Claude Pro and has been trying to stretch it. He checked usage at the start of a chat in the desktop app's Code mode, where a side panel shows a running count. He had only ever checked mid-chat before. The /context command, which shows the count, seems to have been removed from Cowork and now lives in Claude Code.

Where the tokens went

  • System prompt and built-in tools: about 30K, and users cannot change this.
  • Messages: about 23K, likely memories and past-chat context loaded at the start.
  • Skills and MCP tools: about 30K. These are add-ons that let Claude use other apps and services.

What helped, and what did not

Deleting some very old conversations cut Messages to about 14K. Disabling nearly every connector, plugin and skill saved around 8K more. Deleting them outright made no extra difference, because turning them off was enough. The total fell from 84.6K to 68.7K, a drop of roughly 16K. The writer says that might buy one or two extra messages. It is still well above the 30K floor.

The terminal version is lighter

The desktop app's Code and Cowork modes run the Claude Code command-line tool under the hood. So the writer opened it in a terminal, logged in with the same account and sent "Hi." The count was 46.7K, before any tweaks. The system prompt was about 3K there, against nearly 10K in the desktop app. MCP tools took under 1K, versus 13.9K on the desktop.

His conclusion is that the desktop app is heavier on tokens, not just on computer resources, because it ships with extra tooling and a larger system prompt. The terminal tool also lets users set up skills and MCP servers folder by folder.

What to do

Claude Pro users who watch their limits have a few options. None of these figures come from Anthropic, and they reflect one person's account and setup. Results will vary.

  • Turn off connectors, plugins and skills you do not use.
  • Delete very old conversations if memory is loading them.
  • Consider the terminal version if you are comfortable using it.
The takeaway

Hidden startup overhead can eat a big share of Claude's usage, so turn off unused add-ons, clear old chats and consider the terminal version.
