China is carrying Apple's iPhone 18 Pro launch. Sales there rose 29% in the first three weeks compared with the same period last year, according to Counterpoint Research. That covered a 4% drop in the U.S. and a 27% drop in Japan. Worldwide, combined Pro and Pro Max sales rose 3.1%.

What is behind the split

Counterpoint credits China's growth to better early supply and higher prices for rival Android flagships. In the U.S., it says buyers saw too little change in features and design, even with additions such as the variable aperture camera.

Apple also raised U.S. starting prices by $100. The Pro now costs $1,199 and the Pro Max $1,299. In Japan, exchange rates added to the price increases.

The Pro Max share of sales slipped from 57% to 56%. Growth in India and Southeast Asia favored the smaller model.

What is not known yet

These numbers stop before the iPhone Duo, Apple's first foldable iPhone, launched on October 23. Counterpoint is watching whether it brings in new buyers or pulls sales away from the Pro Max. That answer is not in yet.

The takeaway

Higher U.S. prices and a new foldable iPhone Duo may change which model suits you, so watch how sales settle before you buy.
