ChatGPT gets a new editing window for writing and coding

OpenAI added Canvas to ChatGPT, a side window that lets paying users edit one part of a draft or code at a time instead of starting over.

ChatGPT now has a second way to work. OpenAI announced a beta feature called Canvas, which opens a separate editing window for writing and coding projects. Instead of asking for a whole new version each time, you can fix one paragraph or one piece of code and leave the rest alone. For now, it is only for paying subscribers.

What changed

Until now, ChatGPT worked like a chat box. You typed, it answered, and any change meant more back and forth. OpenAI says that setup is limited for projects that need editing and revisions. Canvas looks more like a digital notepad. Mashable reports it is the first major design change to ChatGPT since it launched in 2022.

How it works

Pick "ChatGPT 4o with Canvas" from the model dropdown. Then enter a prompt about writing or coding. ChatGPT is trained to spot certain prompts and open the Canvas window on its own. The normal chat stays in a left sidebar, so you can keep talking to it. To edit writing, highlight a section and click "ask ChatGPT." Shortcuts in the lower right corner offer:

  • Suggest edits
  • Shorten the length
  • Change the reading level
  • Polish for grammar
  • Add emoji

Coding works in a similar way. Coding prompts open the window, and a set of shortcuts handles common jobs:

  • Review code
  • Add logs and comments
  • Fix bugs
  • Port code to another language, such as JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, Java, C++ or PHP

If you make a mistake, the back button restores the previous version. When you finish, close the window to return to the regular chat. The project stays saved in your chat history.

Who can use it

Canvas is in beta. ChatGPT Plus and Teams users can pick it now. Enterprise and Edu subscribers get access the following week, according to the announcement. OpenAI says it plans to open Canvas to non-paying users once it leaves beta.

What is not known yet

The material does not say when the beta will end or when free users will get access. It also does not say whether Canvas will change what any plan costs. Anyone who writes emails, reports or code for work may find it useful, since changes can be made in small pieces. Because this is a beta, the details could shift.

The takeaway

If you pay for ChatGPT and edit drafts or code often, try Canvas from the model dropdown and use highlight-and-edit on one section at a time.
