Cashfree Payments said on November 6, 2026, that AI assistants working inside a web browser can now help with checkout on its Hosted Checkout pages. They can read an order, list payment options and show a QR code. They cannot pay for you. You still approve the payment yourself.
What changed
Hosted Checkout is the payment page Cashfree provides to online shops. It now supports WebMCP, a proposed standard that gives AI agents named tools instead of making them guess where to click. Cashfree says this cuts the tokens needed to finish a checkout by more than 40%. Tokens are the units of work an AI uses to read and write. The page offers six tools:
- Read an order summary, including the amount due after offers
- List the payment methods available
- Open a payment method
- Go back to the list of methods
- Show a UPI QR code
- Check the payment status
What stays in your hands
No tool can move money or accept card numbers, CVVs, one-time passwords or payment tokens. With UPI, you scan the code with any UPI app and approve with your UPI PIN. For other methods, the agent can open an option, but you finish on the page. The QR tool is marked as consequential, so the browser or agent may ask you to confirm first.
A person is also needed when checkout shows a convenience fee, a choice of payment route, autopay setup or a decision about an earlier pending payment. Results leave out email addresses and cart items, and the order summary shows only a masked phone number. Offer text written by the merchant is treated as data, not as instructions for the agent.
Limits to know
- Requires Chrome 149 or later, through a trial Cashfree turns on for its pages
- Works only on redirect checkout pages, not popup, inline, One Click or subscription
- The UPI QR tool works only in the desktop layout
- The confirmation page after payment offers no tools
- Tool names and inputs may change as the standard evolves
Who it affects
For shop owners using Cashfree's redirect checkout, the feature is live without code changes. Agent-assisted payments use the same checkout code, offers, fraud and risk checks as any other payment. Merchants confirm them through the same Get Order API or payment webhooks before shipping. Cashfree says payment kept coming up as an obstacle in talks with more than 50 founders building AI agents.
What happens next
Cashfree says Checkout for Agents is rolling out in phases, and browser support and available tools may change. It is not yet clear how many shops will see agent traffic, or how many shoppers will use it. For now, this is a narrow, supervised form of AI shopping.
The takeawayAI assistants can now help you get through Cashfree's checkout, but only you can approve the payment, and only in a recent Chrome on certain pages.
