Bahrain's largest card company is getting stores ready for a new kind of customer: an AI assistant that shops for you. CrediMax has agreed to work with Mastercard to bring tools for this to merchants across the country. Shoppers set the limits, and each AI purchase uses a one-time or limited-use card credential.

What changed

CrediMax is Bahrain's first and largest card issuer and acquirer. An acquirer is the company that helps stores accept card payments. It will now offer Mastercard's Agent Suite for Merchants, which lets a business build AI-driven shopping into its own website or app. That covers finding products, managing a cart and checking out. CrediMax will also use Mastercard Gateway to process the payments.

How it works

In this model, a shopper hands part of the job to an AI agent, such as searching, comparing, choosing and paying. The agent works inside permissions the shopper defines. Stores publish clear product details, prices, availability and delivery options so agents describe them correctly. The store keeps its brand, its customer relationship and its data.

Payments run through Mastercard Agent Pay, launched in April 2025. Each agent gets a verifiable digital identity. Purchases use agentic tokens, which are single-use or limited-use credentials. Each one caps the amount of a purchase at the shopper's limit and records which agent acted and where. It builds on the same tokenization already behind mobile contactless and card-on-file payments.

Why it matters

The article warns that a store agents cannot read or buy from may become invisible to a growing share of demand. McKinsey projects that agentic commerce could reach $3 trillion to $5 trillion in revenue worldwide by 2030. Regional surveys cited in the story suggest Gulf shoppers and merchants are keener than the global average.

This is not a fresh start. CrediMax and Mastercard also launched Click to Pay in Bahrain in 2024. CrediMax CEO Andrew Hocking said the goal is to help businesses respond to AI agents with confidence while protecting their service standards and customer relationships.

What is not known yet

The material gives no launch date, no list of participating stores, and no pricing. It also does not say which AI assistants will shop at Bahraini stores. The open questions are whether CrediMax can turn this early move into a repeatable model, and whether agentic tokens earn enough trust from banks and shoppers to move beyond pilots.

The takeaway

AI assistants may soon be the ones checking out at your store, so business owners should ask their payment provider how it plans to support them.
