Arc, the web browser known for its fresh ideas, will stop working on December 22. The Browser Company announced the shutdown on the Arc website. The company now wants Arc users to switch to Dia, its newer browser built around artificial intelligence.
What changed
New feature work on Arc ended last year, but the company kept it running. That is ending now. The shutdown happens in stages, and the first one has already started.
- October 22: new Arc accounts can no longer be created.
- November 23: on iPhone and Android, Browse for Me and other AI features are turned off, and sign-in and tab syncing stop.
- December 22: Arc stops opening on Mac and Windows, accounts are deactivated, and Arc Search for Android leaves Google Play.
Who it affects
Anyone who still relies on Arc, on a computer or a phone. The Browser Company says Dia is now its focus, including its whole security team. Last year, Atlassian bought the company for $610 million.
What to do
The company has an FAQ that explains how to import your data into Dia. If you would rather not use Dia, the Zen browser is often recommended for people who want something similar to Arc. It is built on Mozilla's Gecko engine. The announcement as reported does not say what happens to saved data after accounts are deactivated, so moving it before December 22 is the safe choice.
The takeawayIf you use Arc, move your tabs and saved data to Dia or another browser before December 22.
