Apple has released the first test versions of iOS 27.3, iPadOS 27.3 and macOS 27.3, and Safari gets the biggest changes. You can now stack your tabs down the left side instead of across the top. Safari can also turn on dark mode for websites that never offered it. Siri can even close and sort your tabs for you.
What changed
Vertical Tabs is a new layout option. Your open tabs sit in a column on the left side of Safari. By default, each tab shows as a small icon to save space. If you want to read page titles, you can drag the tab bar wider.
- iPhone: open Settings, choose Apps, tap Safari, then look for Vertical Tabs.
- Mac and iPad: turn it on from the View menu inside Safari.
Dark mode for any site
Many websites still glow bright white even when your device is set to Dark Mode. With Adaptive Dark Mode, Safari shows a new Try button on those sites. Tap it and Safari builds a dark version of the page. You can set it to kick in automatically, or choose site by site.
Siri gets hands-on with tabs
Siri can now act directly on your tabs. That includes moving, sorting, organizing and closing them. Apple also plans a later update that lets Siri understand the whole content of a web page, not only the part visible on screen at that moment. No date for that was given.
Why vertical tabs now
Side tabs have become a popular browser feature. The Browser Company's Arc helped popularize them. Arc stopped development last year, and the company announced last month that it will shut it down in December. Safari's new layout gives fans of the idea another option.
What happens next
These are developer betas, meaning early test versions that Apple is rolling out to developers first. Apple is expected to release the updates to everyone sometime in December. Until then, the features may change. Anyone who wants to wait for the finished version can simply do so.
The takeawaySafari's side tabs, one-tap dark mode and Siri tab cleanup are in testing now and will likely reach everyone on iPhone, iPad and Mac in December.
