Apple has announced a new 24-inch iMac with its M6 chip. It starts at $1,499. Pre-orders open October 28, and the computer ships on Friday, November 6. Apple says it is aimed at families, students, creators and small businesses, and that it is a big step up for anyone still on an older Intel-based iMac.

What changed

The M6 chip has up to a 12-core processor and up to a 12-core graphics chip. Each is two cores more than before. Apple also added a dual 16-core Neural Engine, the part of the chip built for AI tasks. The design stays thin and all-in-one, with a 24-inch 4.5K Retina display.

Connections get an update too. The iMac supports Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, offers optional 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet, and has up to four Thunderbolt 4 ports. Apple says its storage is up to 2x faster. It runs macOS 27 and Apple's new Siri AI features.

Apple's speed claims

These are Apple's own numbers, and the full testing details were not included in the material.

  • Up to 18x faster than the most popular Intel-based iMac.
  • Up to 2.5x faster in apps like Microsoft Excel than the M1 iMac, and 1.5x faster than M4.
  • Up to 3.3x faster graphics than M1 for tasks like photo editing, and 2x faster than M4.
  • Up to 5x faster on-device AI than M4.

Who it affects

The clearest group is people on an Intel-based iMac, where Apple says the jump is largest. Owners of M1 or M4 models get smaller gains, and the M4 comparisons are more modest. Apple also points to AI tools that run on the computer itself, which it says keeps data private. That matters for small businesses handling customer records.

The iMac comes in seven colors: blue, green, pink, yellow, purple, orange and silver. Apple says accessories are color-matched.

What is not known yet

The $1,499 figure is the starting price. The material does not say what higher-priced setups cost, or how much memory and storage each one has. Real-world reviews are not out yet, so Apple's speed claims have not been tested by outsiders. Pre-orders open October 28 for anyone who wants to order early.

The takeaway

If you use an older Intel iMac, the M6 model at $1,499 is worth a look, but wait for independent reviews before trusting Apple's speed claims.
