Apple's new HomeView, a $299 home hub, is designed to get household chores done with a spoken request and as few follow-up questions as possible. Apple executives told The Verge that simplicity is the main selling point. HomeView launches November 13 in the US, in tabletop and wall-mounted versions.

What Apple says it does

Lilian Rincon, Apple's vice president of product marketing for AI, said many assistants keep asking for more information. Apple wants Siri AI to act, show what you need and "get out of the way." Her example was changing a thermostat by asking in a natural way. She said the goal is for anyone, from a mother-in-law to a college student, to speak normally and get results.

HomeView can recognize up to six people and show information tailored to each one. Kaiann Drance, Apple's vice president of product marketing for home, tied the timing to Siri AI's ability to use personal context, along with Apple's approach to privacy.

What you need to know

  • Price: $299 in the US for either the tabletop or wall-mounted model.
  • Announced October 13. On sale November 13.
  • Personal requests need a paired iPhone or iPad that supports Apple Intelligence.
  • General knowledge questions, natural conversation and better music discovery work without one.

The material does not say which iPhones and iPads count as supporting Apple Intelligence, and it gives no pricing or launch details outside the US. Anyone considering a purchase should check their own device first, since personal requests are a central part of the pitch.

The takeaway

Before buying HomeView, check that your iPhone or iPad supports Apple Intelligence, because personal requests will not work without it.
