Apple has released iOS 27.2 and iPadOS 27.2, and the updates fix more than 160 security holes. Installing them soon is the safe move, because details of the flaws are now public and phones that skip the update could be targeted.

What changed

One fix covers an Apple Intelligence flaw that could have let a remote attacker reach sensitive data. Another closes a Hide My Email bug that could reveal your real email address. Hide My Email is the feature that hides your real address behind a stand-in.

The update also includes more than 30 fixes for WebKit, the technology that displays web pages, and about 15 fixes for the kernel, the core of the operating system. Six of the fixes credit Calif, a team that publicly showed a jailbreak, which strips away Apple's built-in limits. One of its researchers said most of the flaws behind that jailbreak are fixed in 27.2.

Who it affects

Anyone with an iPhone or iPad. Devices not yet on iOS 27 can install iOS 26.7.2 instead, which carries many of the same security fixes. Anyone with automatic updates on may already have the fix, but a quick check does not hurt.

What is not known

Apple did not say any of the flaws are known to be actively exploited. That is reassuring, but not a reason to wait. The number of fixes in iOS updates keeps growing as AI tools get better at finding bugs. Anthropic Research is credited on three fixes, and four cite OpenAI.

The alert box above lists the steps. The update takes a few minutes.

The takeaway

Update your iPhone or iPad today, using iOS 27.2 or, on older devices, iOS 26.7.2, and turn on automatic updates.
