Apple has unveiled a new MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR, its first MacBook with a touch display. Alongside it, Apple made changes to macOS 27, called Golden Gate, so the Mac is easier to use with a finger and not only a mouse or trackpad.
What changed
Tapping the red, yellow and green window buttons in the top left of an app makes them grow, so they are easier to hit. Menu items in context menus also get a little larger. Many optimized apps have bigger touch areas, even when the buttons look the same.
- Trackpad gestures work on the screen, including pinch to zoom and scrolling a web page.
- Three-finger swipes work too, such as swiping up for Mission Control or swiping between spaces.
- Spotlight can be reached from the Dynamic Island, much like on iPhones running iOS 27.
- App developers can fully control the iPhone app simulator by touch.
Two changes reach every Mac running macOS 27: pull to refresh in Safari and slightly wider spacing between menu bar items.
What is not known yet
The material does not say what the new MacBook Pro costs or when it ships. Apple also says more touch features are coming to the Mac. 9to5Mac expects to see them at the next WWDC, Apple's yearly developer event. For now, touch is a first step, not a finished design.
The takeawayIf you are weighing a Mac purchase, touch has arrived on the MacBook Pro, but Apple says more touch features are still to come.
