Anthropic launches Claude Duet, an AI helper that works in the background

Anthropic's new Claude Duet app works on your email, calendar and other apps in the background, even after you close it. It is invite-only for now.

Anthropic has opened a research preview of Claude Duet, an AI helper you message like a person. It can work in the apps you connect, keep going after you close the app, and come back when it needs a decision from you. Coverage frames it as Anthropic's answer to ChatGPT Dots and Meta Muse.

What it does

You tell Duet what you need, typed or spoken. It then works across the apps you have connected, including email and calendar. Anthropic says it is designed to ask before it sends a message, makes a payment, signs a document or deletes anything.

Duet runs on its own cloud-based computer, which is why it can keep working when your phone is idle. It uses the same memories, skills and connectors as regular Claude, and it can search past conversations so you do not repeat yourself.

Tasks and payments

A Tasks tab shows ongoing work and flags what needs your attention. Duet posts updates to your main conversation when a task is done or needs a decision. Only you can mark a task as finished.

  • Stripe: check for unpaid invoices and draft payment reminders.
  • Link and Shop Pay: make purchases, with your approval.

Cost and availability

Duet costs nothing extra, but its work counts toward your existing plan limits, including work done in the background. Anthropic warns you could hit those limits sooner than with chat alone. It is powered by Claude Opus 5.5.

Access is by invitation, sent out in waves, and there is a waitlist. Duet is available in standalone iOS and Android apps and on the web at claude.ai. It is not available on Team or Enterprise plans yet, though Anthropic plans to add them.

What to weigh before using it

A helper that reads your inbox and can touch payments is useful, but it needs real access. Check which apps you connect and what each one can do. Anthropic says Duet asks first before key actions. The material does not say how invitations are chosen or when wider access will come.

The takeaway

Claude Duet could take email and scheduling chores off your plate, but check what access you grant and watch your plan limits.
