Analyst firm says most big companies will let AI run daily work by 2029

IDC predicts 60% of the world's 2,000 largest companies will run most processes AI-first by 2029, and few can check their AI's decisions today.

Analyst firm IDC predicts that by 2029, 60% of the world's 2,000 largest companies will run most of their business processes AI-first. That means AI agents, which are software that can act on their own, would handle day-to-day operations and decisions. IDC says the figure was 13% in 2026. The forecast was released on October 27, 2026.

What the forecast says

The prediction is part of IDC FutureScape 2027, the firm's yearly outlook for technology leaders at large companies. This edition is titled The Great Rewrite: Winning in the Agentic Economy. It holds 250 predictions across 25 areas, including healthcare, financial services, government, enterprise software and quantum computing.

IDC says its teams worked on each area separately. Compared side by side, they reached the same conclusion: AI is rewriting every layer of company technology at once, but at different speeds.

The checking gap

One number stands out. IDC says only 14% of those big companies can continuously verify the decisions their AI agents make today. It predicts 70% will be able to do so by 2028.

IDC's Meredith Whalen put it this way: the winners will be organizations that verify what each agent does as fast as they deploy it.

Three windows

IDC sorted its predictions by timing. Some windows are closing, where companies with a head start keep widening their lead. Others are open, but the time to shape them is shrinking. A third group is just emerging, with new categories open to whoever moves first.

What is not clear yet

This is a forecast from an analyst firm, not a measurement of what companies have done. The release does not define what counts as a majority of processes. It also does not explain how companies will verify AI decisions. The full 250 predictions are available to the press on request, and the supporting research is for IDC clients.

Who it affects

The forecast covers very large companies, but the effects can reach anyone who deals with them. If you work for one, sell to one or are a customer of one, more decisions may be made by AI. A fair question to ask is how those decisions get checked.

The takeaway

If more big companies let AI run daily work, the useful question is how they check what it decides, since IDC says only 14% can today.
