Amazon has unveiled the Echo Show 16, a 16-inch smart display that doubles as a small TV thanks to built-in Fire TV. The basic version costs $499.99. A version with an anti-glare screen costs $569.99. Pre-orders get $100 off, and the device ships late this year.

What is new

The screen is about 10% bigger than the one on the Echo Show 15. It sits in an aluminum frame that is nearly 40% thinner, which means slimmer borders around the display.

The optional anti-glare finish is called Nanomatte. It etches a fine texture into the glass, and Amazon claims it cuts glare by over 90%. That could help in kitchens, where windows and ceiling lights often cause reflections.

The camera also gains night vision, a first for an Echo Show. A physical kill switch turns off the microphone and camera.

What it can do

  • Three Screen Styles turn the home screen into a smart home dashboard, a family organizer or a photo frame.
  • A remote comes in the box, which suits the TV use.
  • Alexa+, Amazon's upgraded AI assistant, can build interactive visuals, such as a comparison chart while you shop.

What it really costs

Those new Alexa+ visuals need a subscription. Alexa+ is included with a Prime membership. Without Prime, it costs $20 a month.

The stand is sold separately. It costs $69.99, or $124.99 for the model that swivels and tilts. Pair the anti-glare screen with the swivel stand and the total nears $695 before the pre-order discount.

Who it is for

This is a pricey device for people who want one screen to run the house and also play video. Anyone who mostly uses a smart display for timers or checking cameras may find it costs far more than they need. Buyers without Prime should count the monthly Alexa+ fee as part of the price.

The takeaway

Before pre-ordering the Echo Show 16, add up the screen, the stand and the Alexa+ fee if you do not have Prime.
