Amazon has added a new 'External Tool' block to Amazon Connect Customer, its customer service software. It lets automated customer experience flows pull information from other apps or trigger actions in them. Developers no longer need to write custom code to make that happen.

What changed

Until now, linking a flow to an outside app meant writing custom Lambda functions, which are small pieces of code. The new block connects flows to third-party apps through Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Gateway instead. It also reuses the same tools that a company's agentic experiences already use. Those tools follow a standard called Model Context Protocol, or MCP.

Amazon gives a bank-style example. A customer contacts a financial institution about a recent transaction. The flow can fetch case history from the company's CRM system, or transaction details from a banking platform, before anyone steps in.

The feature is available in nine AWS Regions:

  • US East (N. Virginia) and US West (Oregon)
  • Canada (Central)
  • Europe (Frankfurt) and Europe (London)
  • Asia Pacific (Seoul, Singapore, Sydney and Tokyo)

What is not known yet

The announcement does not mention pricing, how long setup takes, or which third-party apps are supported beyond the examples above. It also does not say when more regions will be added. Amazon points readers to its administrator guide for details.

The takeaway

If you run a support team on Amazon Connect, ask your developer whether the new External Tool block can replace custom code for linking your other apps.
