Amazon told U.S. sellers on Thursday, Nov. 5, that it will charge an average of 19 cents more per item to store, pack and ship their orders in 2027. The bigger shift may be storage, where products that sit for a long time will get more expensive.

What changed

Most fee changes start Jan. 15. For sellers who use Fulfillment by Amazon, the service where Amazon stores and ships their products, the average increase is about 0.8% of an item's selling price. Some products will cost less to ship, depending on size, type and price. Amazon will keep its fuel and logistics surcharge.

On Feb. 1, Amazon will drop its storage utilization surcharge. It will fold a separate aging inventory charge into one monthly rate based on how long goods stay in its warehouses. Sellers whose goods move within six months will pay the same or less. Slower sellers will pay more.

Who it affects

Independent merchants make up more than 60% of sales in Amazon's store, so the changes reach a large share of what shoppers buy. Also starting Feb. 1, Amazon will judge low stock using actual shipments in the four weeks before and after a check. That is meant to separate a product that needs regular restocking from a seasonal item with one strong week.

What is not known

The announcement gave averages, not fees for each product. Sellers can use a new dashboard to see how the changes affect individual items. Amazon says faster delivery pays off: purchase rates rise more than 20% when the promised wait drops from over four days to two.

The takeaway

If you sell on Amazon, review slow-moving stock and your prices before Jan. 15, because items that sit past six months will cost more to store.
