Amazon has picked Uber Eats as the official restaurant delivery partner for Prime members in the United States. That ends its deal with Grubhub. If you used your Prime membership to get Grubhub+ perks, those stop Thursday, the day the new partnership was announced.
What changed
Prime members can now order from Uber Eats directly through Amazon.com and the Amazon Shopping app. They do not need to create an Uber account. There is no delivery fee on orders of more than $25, according to the companies.
To get people started, Amazon and Uber are offering Prime members $20 off a first order of $25 or more during the first two weeks.
Why Amazon made the switch
An Amazon spokesperson said the company continuously evaluates its third-party offers. Through that process, Amazon said, it found a chance to deliver an even better restaurant delivery experience. The move also gives Prime members another perk to help justify the annual membership fee.
Amazon and Uber already work together in several areas. Their agreements cover cloud computing, Zoox robotaxis, and Uber Eats inside Alexa+, Amazon's AI-powered assistant.
How the Grubhub deal ended
Amazon first struck a deal with Grubhub in 2022, giving Prime members a free Grubhub+ subscription. Two years later it made that an ongoing offer. It also reached a deal with Grubhub's then-owner, Just Eat Takeaway.com, that could raise Amazon's stake in Grubhub by as much as 18%.
Just months later, Just Eat Takeaway announced plans to sell Grubhub to Wonder. Its annual report says Amazon chose in December 2024 to cash out its outstanding exercisable warrants, which are rights to buy a stake. The commercial partnership continued until now.
