Amazon now lets AI agents work on Linux and Windows 11 cloud desktops. Until now, its WorkSpaces for AI agents service ran only on Windows Server. Amazon announced the change on November 3, 2026.
What changed
An AI agent is a program that carries out tasks on its own, such as working in apps or running commands. A cloud desktop is a computer that runs in Amazon's data centers instead of in your office. Companies can now choose the operating system each agent needs.
- Linux desktops give agents full root access, meaning complete control of the system.
- On Linux, agents can run builds, tests and scripts, which are common developer jobs.
- Windows 11 desktops let agents work in the business apps teams use every day.
All three desktop types share the same safeguards: network isolation, access rules set through IAM (Amazon's system for deciding who can do what), and the compliance limits a company already has in place.
What is not known yet
The announcement does not cover pricing, which regions get the new desktops, or how many agents a company can run. Amazon says agents can work in the same environments a workforce already uses, without re-platforming, meaning without rebuilding existing systems. Setup steps are in Amazon's documentation on agent access.
The takeawayIf your business plans to use AI agents, you can now pick Linux or Windows 11 to match your existing tools, though pricing and regions are not yet stated.
