Being found by an AI shopping helper is not the same as being picked. Retail Dive reports that these tools judge stores on hard data such as price, stock and product details. If that data is wrong or does not match across channels, the helper is less likely to recommend the store. Salesforce predicts 20% of holiday e-commerce traffic will start with AI chat agents.
What changed
People are warming to AI search. McKinsey reports that among people who have tried it, 44% now call it their primary and preferred way to search the internet. That compares with 31% who prefer traditional search.
An AI agent, in this case, is a helper that looks up products for a shopper. A person might fall for a brand story or a look. An agent weighs price, availability and specifications. Abhay Singhal of InMobi says a single wrong price can make an agent less likely to recommend you.
How ready are stores
Not very, by several measures. In a Mirakl survey of seven technology and consulting partners, readiness scored no higher than 4.8 out of 10 in three areas. Of more than 8,000 retail sites run through Glance's ReadySetAgent tool as of mid-September, the top score was 61 out of 100. Adobe found product pages average 66% machine readability, the lowest of any page type it reported on.
Clear data pays off. In the second quarter of 2026, Shopify found AI-referred shoppers on a product page converted about 80% better than organic-search visitors. In specification-heavy categories, the advantage rose to roughly twice the conversion rate.
Where stores slip
- 41% of multichannel retailers report inconsistent pricing and promotions across channels, per Salesforce.
- 40% report inventory that is not synced in real time.
- Only 32% of commerce organizations have fully defined AI success metrics.
- A website update, login change or platform move can cut off agent access without any visible problem.
Singhal says holiday prices and stock can change hourly. In his words, a wrong answer is worse than no answer, and the shopper blames the retailer.
What to do
Singhal says the work mostly starts with systems a retailer already has, not a big AI overhaul. BCG reports that retailers with AI-enabled experiences see conversion gains of 5% to 15%. Gartner warns that more than 40% of agentic AI projects will be canceled by the end of 2027 over cost, unclear value or weak risk controls.
- Make prices and promotions match on every channel.
- Keep stock counts updated live.
- State fit, compatibility, availability and price clearly, not buried in long copy.
- Recheck agent access after any site change.
What happens next
Forrester analyst Sucharita Kodali expects more shoppers to try AI tools this holiday season. Whether that traffic pays off depends on the answers they get. If shoppers feel they found the best product or deal, she says, they may come back.
The takeawayBefore the holidays, check that prices, stock and product details match on every channel, because AI shopping helpers choose stores based on that data.
