About 30% of US shoppers used AI tools to inform a purchase in the past three months, according to an April 2026 L.E.K. Consulting survey of more than 19,000 Americans. Yet letting the AI actually pay is rare. A October 2026 First Page Sage panel of 4,936 shoppers found 6.8% have let an AI agent complete a checkout with their approval, and just 1.3% allow fully automatic buying.
What changed
An AI agent is a tool that acts for the buyer, from research up to placing and paying for the order. The starting point for shopping is shifting. L.E.K. found 46% of AI-assisted shoppers now begin research on a standalone AI platform, up from 25% in 2024. Only 24% start on a traditional search engine.
Agent-completed orders are small but growing fast. They rose from 0.19% of US online orders in Q1 2026 to 0.68% in Q3, per a ClickPost analysis of First Page Sage data. First Page Sage ties 71% of that Q3 jump to Meta Muse, which launched September 8, 2026, with checkout built in.
Where trust drops
- 61.4% use AI to research and discover products.
- 14.6% have let an agent pick items and fill a cart.
- 6.8% have approved an agent-completed purchase.
- 1.3% let an agent buy with no approval step.
Other surveys land in the same low range. Gartner found 11% willing to let AI make purchase decisions, and BCG research put it at 4% for finishing a purchase alone. First Page Sage is a marketing agency, so its numbers are best read as a rough guide. Also, 94% of AI-assisted shoppers still check AI answers before buying.
Why sellers care
Shoppers who arrive from AI tend to buy. Adobe found AI-referred visitors converted 60% better than other traffic in July 2026 and produced 53% more revenue per visit. A year earlier, non-AI visits were worth 128% more. One caution: AI referrals are still under 0.5% of inbound traffic across the 100-plus US brands L.E.K. tracked.
What to do
- Check whether your products appear when you ask AI tools about your category.
- Make the approval step at checkout fast, since the biggest drop is between filling a cart and paying.
- Let product pages confirm a choice, because 31% of AI-assisted shoppers had largely decided before visiting.
BCG estimates AI-driven traffic could overtake organic search traffic in the US as early as 2028. That is a forecast, not a certainty.
The takeawayAI is shaping what people buy far more than it is paying for it, so make sure your products appear in AI answers and checkout approval is quick.
