A writer at Android Police says he sped up a slow, old streaming box by letting Claude, an AI assistant, do the cleanup. The device was a Mi Box S running Android 9, with only about 1GB of free space. He says the job took a few minutes and needed very little effort from him.
What happened
Rajesh Pandey had long found Android TV and low-end streaming boxes slow down over time. Several TVs at home had become painfully slow. He knew that removing preinstalled apps could help, but the steps looked too complicated. A viral post on X showed someone doing it with Claude, so he tried it.
How it worked
He first turned on ADB in the box's hidden Developer Options menu. ADB is a tool that lets a computer send commands to an Android device. Then he gave Claude Code, a version of Claude that runs on a computer, a simple request to find the box on his home network.
Claude noticed ADB was missing on his Mac and installed it. It scanned the network, found two Xiaomi devices and, on a second check, located the Mi Box. He still had to approve an "Allow USB debugging?" prompt on the TV.
What got removed
Asked to clean up the box, Claude did not delete anything right away. It scanned the installed software and listed non-critical packages it could remove. It suggested a reversible method and left the core system, launcher and Google framework packages alone.
- It listed preinstalled streaming apps and asked which ones he did not use.
- It suggested removing PatchWall, Xiaomi's launcher, for a big speed gain.
- Without PatchWall, the box falls back to the standard Android TV home screen.
- It offered to turn off background cache and animations. He said no.
He accepted the PatchWall trade-off, saying a faster box mattered more to him than the look of the home screen. He then repeated the process on other old Android and Google TVs in his house.
What to keep in mind
The article does not give speed tests or say how much storage was freed, so the size of the improvement is not measured. It was also one writer's experience on one older box. Newer Android TV models also need wireless ADB debugging turned on in Developer Options.
The main point is control. The writer decided what to keep and what to remove. Claude only handled the commands he had avoided for years.
The takeawayAn AI helper can make an old TV box cleanup easy, but read each suggestion and approve only what you are happy to lose.
