Angle Health, a company that administers health plans for small and midsize employers, now lets AI voice agents answer many calls from doctor offices. In a pilot, the agents handled about 80% of provider calls. More than 90% of those were resolved without handing the caller to a person. The company says this freed nearly 9,000 staff minutes a day.
What changed
Angle Health's provider team takes thousands of calls a day. Around 80% come from provider offices. They ask whether a patient is covered, check on approval requests called prior authorizations, or ask about the status of a claim. These are routine questions, but callers often wait on hold for the answer. The new agents, built on ElevenLabs' ElevenAgents platform, now take those calls around the clock.
How the agents work
The pilot covers select provider-service tasks. The agents answer in eight languages and connect directly to Angle Health's core system, so they can pull live claim and benefit data. Two agents split the work:
- One verifies the caller, pulls claim and benefit data, and submits prior authorization requests.
- The other handles eligibility checks, benefits questions, claim status and member ID requests.
When a escalated claim is resolved, the agents can also call the doctor's office to explain the outcome. Calls they cannot handle are sent to the right team. Angle Health says daily call volume through the platform grew tenfold, and the platform kept up.
Privacy and testing
Angle Health says it uses the voice agents only under a business associate agreement, a contract required for handling health data. It also uses HIPAA safeguards, including ElevenLabs' Zero Retention Mode. The company tested several vendors. It says ElevenLabs gave the most accurate transcription and task execution in a medical setting, where clinical terms and diagnosis codes must be captured correctly.
What is not known yet
The figures come from an ElevenLabs customer story, not an independent review. The article does not say how long the pilot ran, how many calls it covered in total, or how doctor offices felt about talking to an AI. Angle Health plans to expand the pilot, and has mentioned its commercial, brokerage and account management teams.
What it means for businesses
The pattern is useful beyond insurance. Let AI answer the simple, repeated questions quickly, and keep people free for the hard cases. Angle Health's CEO Ty Wang said every minute saved for a doctor's office goes back to patients. Sensitive data needs clear contracts and privacy settings first.
The takeawayAI phone agents can clear routine calls fast and pass hard ones to people, but the results here are the vendor's own and the pilot is still growing.
