A cheaper, lighter laptop beats a pricier one at running AI at home

A reviewer says a under-$2,000 Asus laptop with 48GB of memory runs bigger AI models at home than a pricier 32GB laptop built for the job.

A tech reviewer at How-To Geek says his favorite laptop for running AI at home is not the fastest one he owns. It is the Asus Zenbook A16, which has 48GB of memory and sells for under $2,000. He says it loads AI models that his 32GB HP OmniBook Ultra 16, which runs NVIDIA's RTX Spark platform, could not.

What the reviewer found

Running AI at home, often called local AI, means the AI works on your own computer instead of an online service. The reviewer says the RTX Spark laptop was quick when models ran, but some models he wanted were too big. One tool he uses, Hermes, needs room to hold more text at once. The Zenbook, which uses a Snapdragon X2 Elite Extreme chip, ran everything he tried, including a model called Qwen 3.8 27B.

Price and weight

The Zenbook costs about half as much as the OmniBook, according to the review. It weighs 2.65 pounds, roughly half the OmniBook's weight. He also says it has better battery life and a screen that is essentially as good, a 3K OLED display.

What is not known

This is one person's hands-on opinion. The review gives no speed numbers, and it does not say how the laptops compare on other tasks. Prices vary, and the reviewer notes the lower price is most likely during sales.

The takeaway

For AI at home, check how much memory a laptop has before paying extra for a faster chip, since models that do not fit will not run well.
