Some people using Microsoft's New Outlook app have found they cannot open email attachments, and a browser update is to blame. Microsoft says an update to its Edge browser, version 156, "unintentionally enabled an unnecessary configuration." A fix began rolling out early today.

What went wrong

Affected users may see an error saying the file cannot be opened, along with a prompt to restart Outlook. After that error, the "Open" option disappears. Restarting alone does not bring it back.

Microsoft confirmed the problem yesterday afternoon in an advisory numbered EX1528992. The case shows how closely linked Microsoft's products are. A change in a web browser ended up affecting an email app.

Who can relax, and what comes next

The older app, Outlook Classic, does not appear to be affected, according to the advisory. If that is what you use, you can likely carry on as normal.

For New Outlook users, Microsoft expects the fix to take about 12 hours to reach everyone. Once it arrives, Outlook must be closed and reopened to feel the benefit. The alert above lays out the steps, including the Save As workaround for urgent files.

What is not known yet

Microsoft has not explained what the "unnecessary configuration" actually is. The Register says it asked the company for details and will update its report if Microsoft responds. Administrators who manage many computers may now think harder about how far a single software update can spread.

The takeaway

If an attachment will not open in New Outlook, save it with Save As and open it yourself, then restart the app once Microsoft's fix arrives.
